Route Overview
The Chengdu–Chongqing HSR runs 299 km from Chengdu East Station to Chongqing North Station (Shapingba), the first high-speed railway connecting these two southwestern megacities. Since opening in 2015, travel time has shrunk from 4 hours to about 1 hour. The line is critical infrastructure for the Chengdu–Chongqing Twin-City Economic Circle, carrying over 100,000 daily passengers and ranking among China's busiest intercity HSR lines. It passes through Ziyang and Neijiang in the heart of the Sichuan Basin.
Operations
The line operates Fuxing CR400AF trainsets at a top speed of 350 km/h. About 80 train pairs run daily, covering all time slots from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The fastest service completes the journey in just 62 minutes. Due to massive demand, advance booking is recommended during peak periods. Both Chengdu East and Chongqing North stations are centrally located with convenient metro connections. Ziyang North and Neijiang North stations along the way also serve as gateways to nearby cities.
Scenery Along the Way
The Chengdu–Chongqing HSR traverses the rolling hills of the Sichuan Basin, with gentle slopes and terraced fields stretching outside the windows. In spring, blooming rapeseed fields paint the landscape in brilliant gold. Passing through Neijiang — the "Sweet City" — its century-old sugar industry heritage adds local flavor. Though just an hour long, the pastoral scenery and Bashu charm make the journey thoroughly enjoyable. Arriving in Chongqing, the dramatic 3D cityscape delivers an instant visual jolt.
Travel Tips
With frequent departures, you can often just show up and go. However, during May Day and National Day holidays, demand surges — book in advance. Chengdu East Station is accessible via Metro Lines 2 and 7; Chongqing Shapingba Station is in the city center with Metro Line 1 transfers. Plan 2–3 days in each city to experience their contrasting vibes — Chengdu's laid-back ease versus Chongqing's fiery energy.
