Overview
China's high-speed rail (HSR) is the world's largest and longest high-speed railway network. By the end of 2024, China's HSR network exceeded 45,000 kilometers, covering over 90% of cities with populations above 500,000. Chinese HSR trains operate at speeds above 250 km/h, with the Fuxing (Renaissance) trainsets reaching a top operating speed of 350 km/h — among the fastest commercial trains on Earth. Since the Beijing–Tianjin Intercity Railway opened in 2008, China built this nationwide network in just over a decade, earning the international reputation as "China's calling card."
Development History
China's HSR development can be divided into several key phases. In 2004, the State Council approved the Medium- and Long-Term Railway Network Plan, launching the HSR era. On August 1, 2008, the Beijing–Tianjin Intercity Railway — China's first 350 km/h HSR line — opened, marking the country's entry into the high-speed rail age. The Beijing–Shanghai HSR opened in 2011, connecting the two most important cities. The Beijing–Guangzhou HSR was fully completed in 2012 as the world's then-longest HSR line. The Shanghai–Kunming HSR opened fully in 2016, completing the "Four Vertical, Four Horizontal" backbone. China then entered the "Eight Vertical, Eight Horizontal" era, continuously densifying and extending the network.
Technological Achievements
China's HSR has achieved remarkable technological breakthroughs. The Fuxing CR400AF/BF trainsets are China's fully indigenous high-speed trains, operating safely and reliably at 350 km/h. Chinese HSR leads the world in bridge and tunnel engineering — the Nanjing Dashengguan Yangtze Bridge on the Beijing–Shanghai HSR, the massive Qinling tunnel group on the Xi'an–Chengdu HSR, and the undersea tunnel on the Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong HSR all represent the highest global engineering standards. China has also achieved safe operation in extreme environments: extreme cold (Beijing–Harbin HSR), sandstorms (Lanzhou–Xinjiang HSR), and high altitude (Lhasa–Nyingchi Railway), demonstrating world-leading adaptability.
Route Network
China's HSR is built on the "Eight Vertical, Eight Horizontal" master plan. The "eight verticals" include the Coastal Corridor, Beijing–Shanghai Corridor, and Beijing–Hong Kong (Taiwan) Corridor, among others; the "eight horizontals" include the Suiman Corridor, Beijing–Lanzhou Corridor, Yangtze River Corridor, and Shanghai–Kunming Corridor. These corridors interweave to form a nationwide HSR web. Major lines include the Beijing–Shanghai HSR, Beijing–Guangzhou HSR, Shanghai–Kunming HSR, and Beijing–Harbin HSR. Together they connect all provincial capitals and major economic cities, creating an "8-hour transportation circle."
Train Types
China's HSR features three main train series. The Fuxing (CR series) is the latest generation with fully indigenous intellectual property, operating at up to 350 km/h. Fuxing interiors are spacious and bright, offering Business, First, and Second Class — Business Class features 180° lie-flat seats, personal entertainment systems, and meal service. The Hexie (CRH series), developed through technology transfer and innovation, remains in wide service. By service tier, G-series are high-speed trains (300–350 km/h), D-series are express EMUs (200–250 km/h), and C-series are intercity trains.
Travel Guide
Riding China's HSR is highly convenient. Tickets can be purchased via the official 12306 website and app (account registration required), station counters, or third-party platforms like Ctrip and Qunar. International travelers can use their passport to purchase tickets and board trains. The process is simple: arrive at the station 15–30 minutes early, pass through security and ticket gates, and wait on the platform. China's HSR supports e-tickets — no paper ticket needed; just swipe your ID or passport at the gate. Luggage is carry-on only (20 kg limit, no check-in). Hot water is available on board, dining cars serve meals, and some trains offer free WiFi.
Future Outlook
China's HSR construction continues at full speed. According to the "14th Five-Year Plan for Modern Comprehensive Transport," HSR mileage will reach approximately 50,000 km by 2025. Multiple new lines are under construction or planning, including the Chongqing–Kunming, Xi'an–Shiyan, and Chengdu–Dazhou–Wanzhou HSR. On the innovation front, next-generation trains capable of 400 km/h are under development. China's HSR is also "going global," participating in international projects like the Jakarta–Bandung HSR (Indonesia) and the China–Laos Railway. Maglev technology is advancing as well — a 600 km/h high-speed maglev prototype has been completed, promising an entirely new mode of travel in the future.
