Route Overview
The Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong HSR runs 142 km from Guangzhou South Station through Dongguan Humen, Shenzhen North, and Shenzhen Futian to Hong Kong West Kowloon Station. When the full line opened in September 2018, travel time between Guangzhou and Hong Kong dropped to just 47 minutes. The line is a landmark project for Greater Bay Area connectivity and the first time China's HSR network extended into the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. West Kowloon Station features a "co-location" arrangement, allowing passengers to complete both mainland and Hong Kong immigration at the same station.
Operations
The Guangzhou–Shenzhen section has a design speed of 350 km/h, while the Shenzhen–Hong Kong section runs at 200 km/h. Guangzhou South to Hong Kong West Kowloon takes about 47 minutes, Shenzhen North about 19 minutes, and Shenzhen Futian just 14 minutes. About 30–40 train pairs run daily. Through the Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong HSR, Hong Kong also enjoys direct services to Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Changsha, and other major cities nationwide. Business, First, and Second Class seats are all available.
Scenery Along the Way
Though just 142 km, the route offers varied views. Departing Guangzhou South, the train crosses the bustling Pearl River Delta urban cluster — near Dongguan Humen, passengers can glimpse the Humen Bridge and the Pearl River estuary. In the Shenzhen section, the modern city skyline glides past. Entering Hong Kong, the train passes through a 26-km undersea tunnel before arriving at West Kowloon Station on the Kowloon Peninsula. The station itself, designed by a world-renowned architect, is a piece of architectural art.
Travel Tips
Traveling to Hong Kong via this line requires a valid Exit-Entry Permit or passport. West Kowloon Station's "co-location" system handles both mainland and Hong Kong immigration within the station — very convenient. The station is in central Hong Kong, within walking distance of Victoria Harbour, the Star Ferry, and Tsim Sha Tsui shopping. The Shenzhen–Hong Kong segment has frequent services, so same-day tickets are usually available. Mainland ID holders can book via 12306, while Hong Kong/Macau travelers can use MTR or platforms like Ctrip.
