Route Overview
The Shanghai–Kunming HSR runs 2,252 km from Shanghai Hongqiao Station to Kunming South Station, making it China's longest east-west HSR line. It traverses six provinces and one municipality — Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guizhou, and Yunnan — passing through major cities like Hangzhou, Nanchang, Changsha, Huaihua, Guiyang, and Qujing. It intersects the Beijing–Guangzhou HSR at Changsha and the Guiyang–Guangzhou HSR at Guiyang, forming a key horizontal axis in China's "Eight Vertical and Eight Horizontal" HSR grid.
Operations
The eastern section (Shanghai to Changsha) has a design speed of 350 km/h, while the western section (Changsha to Kunming) is designed for 300 km/h. The full journey takes about 10 hours. Travelers can ride in segments — Shanghai to Hangzhou takes just 45 minutes, Hangzhou to Changsha about 3.5 hours, Changsha to Guiyang about 3 hours, and Guiyang to Kunming about 2 hours. Numerous daily services ensure frequent departures.
Scenery Along the Way
The Shanghai–Kunming HSR offers China's most diverse scenery. Setting off from Jiangnan watertown country, passing West Lake in Hangzhou, and winding through Zhejiang's hills into Jiangxi, travelers encounter Wuyuan's rapeseed fields and Longhu Mountain's Danxia formations. Crossing Hunan, the Xuefeng Mountains rise majestically in the distance. Entering Guizhou, the train threads through karst landscapes with tunnels and bridges alternating — Wanfenglin and Huangguoshu Waterfall are nearby. Finally arriving in "Colorful Yunnan," the panoramic beauty of Dianchi Lake unfolds.
Travel Tips
Consider breaking the journey into segments with 1–2 day stops in Hangzhou, Changsha, and Guiyang. The Guizhou section has many tunnels with frequent light changes. Kunming enjoys spring-like weather year-round but UV levels are strong — pack sunscreen. The cities along the way each offer distinctive cuisines — Hangzhou's West Lake Vinegar Fish, Changsha's stinky tofu, Guiyang's sour fish soup, and Kunming's crossing-the-bridge rice noodles make this a true "gourmet HSR line."
