Route Overview
The Beijing–Harbin HSR runs 1,198 km from Beijing Chaoyang Station through Chengde (Hebei), Shenyang (Liaoning), and Changchun (Jilin) to Harbin West Station (Heilongjiang). When the Beijing–Chengde section opened in January 2021, the full line was completed, cutting travel time from 7–8 hours to about 4.5 hours. The Beijing–Harbin HSR is a vital component of the "Eight Vertical and Eight Horizontal" HSR grid and plays a significant role in revitalizing the northeast economy.
Operations
The line operates Fuxing CR400BF trainsets at a design speed of 350 km/h. Beijing Chaoyang Station, opened in 2021, is located in eastern Beijing and accessible via Metro Line 3. Key stops include Chengde South, Shenyang North, Changchun West, and Harbin West. Beijing to Shenyang takes about 2.5 hours, and Shenyang to Harbin about 2 hours. For winter operation, the trains feature special anti-freeze and cold-resistant designs ensuring safe service at temperatures down to minus 30°C.
Scenery Along the Way
The Beijing–Harbin HSR crosses the vast northern Chinese landscape. After passing through the Yanshan Mountains from Beijing, the Chengde section offers distant views of the Mountain Resort's imperial gardens. Entering Liaoning, the boundless Northeast Plains stretch to the horizon — blanketed in snow in winter and rippling with green in summer. Shenyang's Mukden Palace and the Hun River banks flash past the windows. Passing Changchun, the Puppet Manchukuo Palace evokes complex historical memories. Finally arriving in Harbin, the frozen Songhua River and European-style buildings along its banks create a uniquely northern panorama.
Travel Tips
For winter travel, dress in heavy, warm layers — Harbin winters can reach minus 20–30°C. Consider a day stop in Shenyang to visit the Mukden Palace and Marshal Zhang's Mansion. If visiting Harbin in winter, don't miss Ice and Snow World, but note that phone batteries drain extremely fast in extreme cold — keep hand warmers attached to your device. In summer, the Northeast enjoys cool, pleasant weather ideal for escaping the heat. Beijing Chaoyang Station is relatively new and surrounding facilities are still developing — plan your onward transport in advance.
